Navigating this Archive

While we realize that many who will use this resource are casual browsers, nevertheless the primary goal of this CD was to preserve and make accessible the most vital information for present and future generations of researchers.

In general, the need to preserve these pages for posterity was in conflict with the desire that this might also be an easily accessible resource for the casual user.  We attempted to accomplish both objectives by providing alternative views of many pages, and in some cases more than two views of charts and graphics.  In that way browsers can easily 'leaf' through the pages and when a closer study of the numbers is required, zoom in to read the data.

Each of the most important pages of the Yearbook is captured with sufficient clarity that the data can be further processed in the future.  We leave open the possibility of conversion of these graphical data into digital forms with more flexibility in accessing the information through databases, indexes and search engines.

In this archive we have also begun the process of converting static images of the statistical data pages into computable formats.  Future projects might tackle the job of optically recognizing all the rest of the numerical data so that the archive's data might be most easily analyzed.
