Four NCC Communions Rank in Top Five in
Protestant Church Giving in the United States
Four of the NCC's member communions ranked in the top five in
contributions received by U.S. Protestant churches in 2000, according to figures
reported in the April 18 edition of The Chronicle of Philanthropy.
They
included the United Methodist Church, #2 at $4.7 billion; Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), #3 at $2.9 billion; Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America, #4 at $2.3 billion; and The Episcopal Church,
#5 at $2.1 billion. Non-NCC member Southern Baptist Convention, ranked #1
in contributions, received $8.4 billion. Among NCC communions, The
Episcopal Church and the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) virtually tied for highest
giving per full or confirmed member, at $1,155 each. The nationwide
average of all Protestants was $549 per member. The Chronicle article
drew its data from the extensive statistical reports in the 2002 Yearbook of
American and Canadian Churches, an annual NCC publication edited by the
Rev. Dr. Eileen W. Lindner, the Council's Deputy General Secretary for Research
and Planning. Click here to
