Directories Section, CHAPTER 3
Religious Bodies in the United States
Introduction to the Directory
The
United States, with its staunch constitutional stance on religious freedom and
successive waves of immigrants over the last three centuries, has proved to be a
fertile soil for the development of varied Christian traditions.
In the directory which follows, some 216 distinct church traditions are
represented. Many of these groups
represent the processes of dividing and re-uniting that are a hallmark of the
American religious contexts. Many
churches listed here represent those with a long tradition in Europe, Africa, or
Asia predating their American tenure. Others
are American-born churches. The researcher may be helped by consulting the
churches grouped by tradition at the end of this directory in the section
entitled, “Religious Bodies in the United States Arranged by Families.” In
this section, all the Baptists bodies are listed together, all the Lutheran
bodies, Methodists, etc.
The
following directory information is supplied by the national headquarters of each
church. Each listing contains a
brief description of the church, followed by the national headquarters contact
information, which includes a mailing address, telephone and fax numbers, email
and website addresses (when available), and the name of the media contact.
After the headquarters, there are data regarding the church officers or
leaders, including names, titles, and contact information (when contact
information differs from the headquarters). There is a staggering array of
churches, each with its own form of organization; not all of them refer to their
leaders as “officers.” In some places, the reader will find the term “Bishops,”
“Board Members,” or “Executives” in place of “Officers.”
Finally, when applicable, each entry contains a list of the names of church
publications.
The
churches are printed in alphabetical order by the official name of the
organization. There are a few instances in which certain churches are more
commonly known by another name. In such cases, the reader is referred
incidentally within the text to the appropriate official name. Churches
that are member communions of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the
U.S.A. are marked with an asterisk (*).
Other
useful information about the churches listed here can be found in other chapters
or directories within the book: Statistical information for these churches can
be found in the tables toward the end of this book in Chapter III.
Further, more extensive information about the publications listed in this
directory can be found in Directory 11, "Religious Periodicals in the
United States". For a list of church websites, see Directory 5,
"The Emerging Electronic Church."
The
organizations listed here represent the denominations to which the vast majority
of church members in the United States belong. It does not include all religious
bodies functioning in the United States. The Encyclopedia of American Religions
(Gale Research Inc., P.O. Box 33477, Detroit MI 48232-5477) contains names and
addresses of additional religious bodies.

Christ.
Organized

Albanian Orthodox Archdiocese in America
The
Albanian Orthodox Church in America traces its origins to the groups of Albanian
immigrants which first arrived in the United States in 1886, seeking religious,
cultural and economic freedoms denied them in the homeland.
In
1908 in Boston, the Rev. Fan Stylian Noli (later Archbishop) served the first
liturgy in the Albanian language in 500 years, to which Orthodox Albanians
rallied, forming their own diocese in 1919. Parishes began to spring up
throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic and Great Lakes states. In 1922,
clergy from the United States traveled to Albania to proclaim the
self-governance of the Orthodox Church in the homeland at the Congress of Berat.
In 1971 the Albanian Archdiocese sought and gained union with the Orthodox Church in America, expressing the desire to expand the Orthodox witness to America at large, giving it an indigenous character. The Albanian Archdiocese remains vigilant for its brothers and sisters in the homeland and serves as an important resource for human rights issues and Albanian affairs, in addition to its programs for youth, theological education, vocational interest programs and retreats for young adults and women.
